The city, surrounded by a lagoon, has a wide sandy beach with many shops, cafes and restaurants. This makes it a pleasant seaside resort and an excellent place to start or end your trip through Sri Lanka. Depending on your arrival time, you have the rest of the day to yourself to relax. Drive to Wilpattu National Park Wilpattu National Park is located on the northwest coast of Sri Lanka's arid lowlands. It consists of a unique complex of lakes called Villus. These are natural pools filled with rainwater and surrounded by open grassy plains surrounded by dense jungle. The biggest attraction in Wilpattu are leopards and sloths. You can also see Asian elephants, spotted deer, barking deer, wild boar, Asian buffalo and mugger crocodiles. Endemic birds include the Ceylon Junglefowl, Brown-capped Babbler, Ceylon Woodshrike, and Black-capped Bulbul in riverine habitats. Muntjac or Barking Deer are more common in Wilpattu than in other national parks. Butterflies observed include the greater eggfly, In the afternoon go on a jeep safari in Wilpattu National Park. Branded as a sacred city among the devoted Buddhists, the city is one of the most evocative sights in South East Asia. It is speckled with high rising white dagabas and stupas, all proud creations of the great monarchs that used to rule the land. Among the many fascinating ancient ruins are huge bell-shaped stupas built of small sun-dried bricks, temples, sculptures, palaces, and ancient drinking-water reservoirs. Statues of Lord Buddha stand as evidence of the country’s religious affiliations since the past. Each monument carries its own significant tale, a story worth knowing and remembering the frequent religious ceremonies that draw in throngs of devotees give Anuradhapura a vibrancy which makes the onlookers nostalgic of the days gone by. There are countless sights to see at Anuradhapura out of which Ruwanweliseya, the Brazen Palace, Sri Maha Bodhiya, Mirisevetiya, Abhyagiriya, Jethavanaramaya, Thuparamaya and Isurumuniya come at the top of the list Walk under the shade of the Sri Maha Bodhiya, the sacred tree that grew to be one of the oldest tress in the world. Breakfast in the hotel. When you travel to Sri Lanka, Sigiriya should not be missing from your itinerary. Here is the famous Lion's Rock. The Lion's Rock is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the fifth century AD, the then king Kasyapa built an impressive palace here, which even included a swimming pool. You will also find a mirror wall, the Water Gardens and murals. It is said that he had fun adventures here with many women. At the top of the 200 meter high Lion's Rock you have a real view. Sigiriya was probably already inhabited in prehistoric times. It was used as a mountain monastery in the 3rd century BC, with caves made by devotees and donated to the Buddhist Sangha. After Kasyapa's death it was a monastic complex inhabited until about the 14th century, when it was abandoned. The ruins were rediscovered in 1907 by British explorer John Still. Step off the cart to start a hike across the village through the paddy fields and through home gardens. At each step of your way you will be met with a genuine smile of the unpretentious villagers. Walk along the banks of the lake until you meet your next mode of transportation; a Canoe ride. Paddle through the lake on the home made Canoe as you watch small exotic birds hopping from one aquatic plant to another. You will be invited to a cup of tea. Here you have the opportunity to experience the local cooking guided by a lady. Let yourself learn the traditional ways of cooking a delicious and an equally enticing Sri Lankan meal in clay pots over an open hearth. Enjoy Sri Lankan village lunch. Afterwards visit Polonnaruwa, the island’s second largest kingdom and a World Heritage Site. Today the ancient city of Polonnaruwa remains one of the best planned Archeological relic sites in the country, standing testimony to the discipline and greatness of the Kingdom’s first rulers. You can admire the remains of the Royal Palace, Gal Vihara which is a group of beautiful Buddha images marking the high point of Sinhalese rock cravings, the Lotus Pond, the statue of King Parakramabahu and the historic Audience Hall. After a delicious breakfast we leave for Kandy. On this panoramic tour we pass through Dambulla. Here we stop to visit the Golden Temple (Dambulla cave temple). The Golden Temple is the main attraction in Dambulla. Located on a hill, the temple is built into overhanging rocks behind which 5 caves are hidden. In addition to the Hindu gods Ganesh and Vishnu, most statues and paintings are of Buddha. Enjoy the tour and ask the driver to stop if you see something nice or special. Along the way, stops include a Spice Garden or a Batik workshop in Matale. In the Spice Garden you come to the source of the world-famous spices from Sri Lanka. Where scents of cinnamon, pepper, cardamom, nutmeg and mace overwhelm the senses. Here you will get a glimpse into the age-old industry of spice production, which attracted many European and Asian traders to the ports of ancient Ceylon.
